Focusing on trip reliability, active traffic management (ATM) – widely deployed for decades in Europe but in its early stages in the United States – maximizes the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility, and increases throughput and safety through integrated systems with new technology, including the automation of dynamic deployment to optimize performance quickly.  This congestion management approach consists of a combination of strategies that, when implemented in concert, fully optimize the existing infrastructure and provide measurable benefits to the transportation network and the motoring public.  These strategies include:

  • speed harmonization,
  • temporary shoulder use,
  • junction control,
  • dynamic signing and re-routing.

This webinar provided participants with information on best practices for deployment and operation of ATM strategies that can help a positive impact on transportation networks where ATM is deployed.  The webinar provided an overview of ATM, information on operational strategies and examples, and general guidelines on their deployment.

Transportation and mobility are at the very center of the American way of life. Mobility issues impact nearly every aspect of society, including health care, recreation, education, goods manufacturing and delivery, and national security. Thus, as we address mobility issues at national, regional and local levels, we improve the quality of life for Americans.

What We Do:

UTCM facilitates mobility enhancement through competitive funding of programs in Research, Education, and Technology Transfer.

The four research focus areas of the UTCM are:

UTCM Sponsored Websites

Mileage-Based User Fees Website

Mileage-Based User Fees Website

This website offers information for professionals in the field of road user fees to advance the discussion of user-based fees as a potential replacement for the fuel tax. It includes proceedings from the UTCM-sponsored Mileage-Based User Fee Symposia (2009-2011), information and links on the topic of mileage-based user fees, and a link to the 2012 Mileage-Based User Fees and Transportation Finance Summit website.

Active Traffic Management (ATM) Website

Active Traffic Management Website

An informational resource for ATM operational strategies from overseas and across the U.S., including ATM projects and facilities, ongoing and completed research, information on meetings and other events related to ATM. The site also has links to key related Internet sites, and information on the TRB Joint Subcommittee on Active Traffic Management.

A Guide to Transportation Funding Options

An on-line reference guide to transportation financing for decision-makers. The Guide clearly explains financing options across all levels of government. Phase I covers highway funding options. A review of all other modes of surface transportation will follow in future phases.
